To engage first gear, move the gearshift into position, which causes the selector fork to move the collar between gears one and two into first gear. The throttle is applied lightly while the clutch pedal is released with the left foot while the right foot continues to apply more throttle. It is necessary to go through this process multiple times to shift gears. When the car stops, depress the clutch, put the gearshift in neutral, and then release it.
